STR 1 Pair SW/HW on Hypothesis Testing and Statistical Tests

Answer the following questions on a sheet of pad paper. Refer to the section on Hypothesis Testing and Statistical Tests in your STR manual or to any appropriate reference.

  1. What is a statistical hypothesis?
  2. Differentiate between a null and an alternative hypothesis.
  3. What is a test statistic?
  4. Differentiate between a one-tailed and a two-tailed test.
  5. Differentiate between a Type I error and a Type II error. Which is more acceptable in scientific research? Why? (Hint: Suppose the research is on the effectiveness of a certain leaf extract against pancreatic cancer. Would making a Type I or a Type II error do more harm?)
  6. What is meant by setting the level of significance at 0.05?
  7. Fill in the table showing the differences between the following statistical tests —
